Vanderhoef not running for reelection?

A reliable source has told Left of the Hudson that C. Scott Vanderhoef will not likely seek reelection to his post as Rockland County Executive, which could open the door for Republican County Legislator Ed Day of New City.

The source, which has brought some pretty juicy scoops to LOTH in the past—including naming Ramapo Town Clerk Christian Sampson as Ellen Jaffee's primary opponent for State Assembly last year—told us: "I've spoken to several people close to Scott and he's 90 percent sure he's not running."

This is no surprise to LOTH. While Vanderhoef has been actively fundraising, it's not unusual for incumbents to do so and use the money to seek another office. It has long been rumored that Vanderhoef is one of the Rockland GOP's picks (along with Board of Elections Commish Joan M. Silvestri) to succeed State Senator Thomas P. Morahan should Morahan not seek office in 2010. There has been open speculation that the long-entrenched Morahan—now part of the State Senate minority—will not seek reelection now that his member-item slush fund has been ripped from him and he has lost his committee chairmanships. Silvestri is Sen. Morahan's daughter.

It also seems odd that Day, a Republican and supporter of Vanderhoef, would publicly toy with the idea of running for County Executive. It would be political suicide for him to run in a primary against the four-term County Executive.

Currently, only Orangetown Supervisor Thom Kleiner, a Democrat, has thrown his hat in the ring. Kleiner will formally announce his candidacy Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Rockland County Office Building.

There is also a "Draft Harriet Cornell" movement begun by Thomas Stoner of the Working Families Party, to try to coax the Rockland Legislature Chair into running. Cornell has told LOTH that she is not interested in the job.

Interesting, but if he doesnt run he has to have some employment backup besides running for an iffy senate seat in a year. He has a young set of twins and cant afford to take a year off. Plus, the senate seat would be no easy win, I'm sure the Senate Dems would throw all their weight behind picking up this seat and with two popular Assemblymembers (Zebrowski and Jaffee) as possible candidates the seat may very well go Democratic. As for Ed Day he could be a strong candidate against Kleiner but I have always gotten the impression that many people just dont like that man. Makes for an interesting year!

It's very interesting and it explains Ed Day's very strange posturing for County Exec. However, I think your speculation as to why Vanderhoef would not seek reelection is incorrect. Vanderhoef surely did an internal poll to see how he would fair against other challengers and I would say that he probably did poorly this time around. After all, this is the highest-taxed county in New York (and the seventh highest in the nation) and the county bond rating is junk. Add that with Vanderhoef's attempts to get his cronies jobs and get them raises while other county workers worried about buyouts and wage freezes, and you would have to be a real wingnut to vote for him.

So, if your source is right (and it makes perfect sense to me), Vanderhoef's not running would be a face-saving decision, not a career decision.

Ed Day is sure acting like he's running. Maybe Vanderhoef can't win among Republicans in a primary against Day.

Your source must be the same person who talked to me (the quote you published is precisely what I heard). But I think his source was Ed Day.

A few weeks later and yet nothing from Day or Vanderhoef? I'm hearing rumors about Scott waiting for job offers, how about you? The least that Scott can do is deny that he's not running. The whole county is talking about this and yet we don't even hear a denial. Do you know what's up?
